What is resveratrol ?

Resveratrol (3-4'-5-trihydroxystilbene) is a non-flavonoid polyphenol compound with the chemical name 3,4', 5-trihydroxy-1, 2-diphenyl ethylene (3,4', 5-stilbene), molecular formula C14H12O3, molecular weight 228.25. The pure product of resveratrol is white to light yellow powder, odorless, insoluble in water, soluble in  trichloromethane, methanol, ethanol,  ethyl acetate and other organic solvents, melting point 253 ~ 255℃, sublimation temperature 261℃. Resveratrol can appear red with alkaline solution such as ammonia, and can react with ferric chloride and potassium ferricocyanide, and can be identified by this property.
