Sodium butyrate is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₇O₂Na and a molecular weight of 110.0869.It is the sodium salt of butyric acid. It appears as white or off-white powder, has a special rancid cheese-like fat smell, and is hygroscopic.Sodium butyrate is easily soluble in water and ethanol, with a density of 0.96 g/mL (25/4℃) and a melting point of 250~253℃.Sodium butyrate can be prepared by the reaction of butyric acid and sodium hydroxide, or it can also be prepared by other methods.In the laboratory, sodium butyrate is usually found as a white, water-soluble, crystalline solid.
