1. Nervous system effects

(1) Anti-anxiety effect: Kava lactones in kava extract can improve the attention, memory and reaction ability of patients with anxiety disorders, and put patients in a relaxed state, but its effect is slow. Jena University in Germany conducted a controlled experiment on 101 outpatients with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive neurosis. The patients were given 100 mg/day of kava extract and placebo respectively. After 8 weeks, the kava group had a significant effect.

(2) Sedative and hypnotic effect: Intravenous or oral administration of dihydrocapsaicin or dihydroanesthetic capsaicin has a sedative and hypnotic effect on mice, rats, rabbits and cats. High doses can cause ataxia and loss of normal reflexes. It is currently believed that kava pyrones may act through GABA receptor binding sites.

(3) Local anesthetic effect: Kava extract can cause muscle paralysis, has a local anesthetic effect on experimental frogs, and paralyzes the wings of bats and sparrows. Mechanism of action: It works by blocking potential-dependent sodium channels.

2. Antifungal effect
Kava pyrones have no inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria, and some kavapyrones have significant inhibitory effects on many fungi, including some human pathogens.

3. Muscle relaxant effect
All types of kava pyrones have muscle relaxant effects on various experimental animals, and are more effective than mephenesin in protecting mice against strychnine-induced convulsions and lethality.

4. Other effects
Kava extracts also have diuretic and anti-thrombotic effects.
